Holiday Memories

I thought it would be a great idea to try my nail polish stamps with gel nails. Guess what? It doesn’t work. Like, not at all. It was late at night and I had to do something! I needed easy holiday nails now! I pulled up an old standby, “ruby pumps” by China Glaze. WIth each brush stroke a memory filled my head. How is it I have so many memories with this color? I started to recount all these memories and I realized I’ve had this color for 25 years. 25 freaking years! Unlike other colors, this one is a deep and sparkly red and perfect for the holidays. I tended to wear it for parties and special holidays events. This wasn’t a color for just any day. I guess that’s why I can look back to so many different times I wore this color. I always wore it for something special. And now “ruby pumps” has 25 years of special memories attached to it.

Raising the bar

This chameleon gel nail polish set a new bar in the world of nail polish. I have always been drawn to polish that is more than just color. I tried my first color-changing polish in the year 1996. That polish changed when hit by UV light (sunlight). I remember it well. Even though I remember it fondly, it didn’t work very well. It only had a few changes before the color difference was negligible. Eventually it would change from silver to pale green. The next level in the color-changing experience was the Maui Girl color changing polish. The Maui Girl polish came in a pack of 6. Out of the 6, one bottle worked really well. The other changed from magenta to deep pink. Again, a change, but not much. Then along came this chameleon polish. I put it on my Christmas list a couple of years ago. I don’t have very many gel colors. Gel colors tend to be pricey, upwards of $20-$25 per bottle. I can’t justify that expense, but when I saw this pack of reasonably-priced chameleon colors I thought they would be fun.

This polish performs better than I could ever imagine. The coolest thing? The color changes FAST. It is sensitive to many temperature gradients, so I can watch it go from deep midnight to bright clue to pale blue to white in a matter of moments. Step outside, put your hand next to a heater, and the colors respond faster than a second. I can have warm hands in a cold room, and cold hands in a warm room- they are that sensitive! I can see how much colder my raynaud’s fingers are on any given moment. I can note a temperature difference between my thumbs and fingers based on how my hands are in my pockets. I’ve never seen anything so sensitive and responsive.

This polish was a breeze to apply. It went on smooth and wasn’t too thin or drippy. I was able to apply several thin coats quickly and cleanly.

On top of all that, this polish has lasting power. As I type this, I am on day 15 of wearing this polish and I only have 2 small chips. I got the chips from fumbling around trying to open a box about a week ago. I’ve been washing dishes, loading pallets, skiing, cooking food; al sorts of things that tend to kill nail polish, but nope, this stuff is solid.

It glows!

I wanted to use some of my glow in the dark polish that I haven’t used in way too long. So, I layered on a bright sky blue first. This is a perfect tone for the first week of spring. This is Sally Hansen’s Insta Dry, so it goes on thick.

And, like it said, it dried instantly. Then I added the glow top coat. In daylight it looks just like a sparkly shimmer. But. The glow coat DOESN’T dry instantly. So of course my impatient self couldn’t sit still and I smudged a few fingers. Oh well. Not gonna stress it. Having glowing nails is way cooler than having perfect nails.

I lost my pencil the other day. I reached over into the ever-looming couch cushion. I reached deeper and deeper until the couch consumed most of my arm. Then I found the treasure trove. I pulled about over a dozen pens, pencils and nail files. Clips, bookmarks, batteries, scissors, the list goes on. And…a bottle of nail polish. I am pretty sure the bottle didn’t belong to me. We texted the couch’s previous owner, and she didn’t think it was hers either. Well, time to try it out. It’s called “brilliant brushstroke” by Finger Paint. I thought the paint would be old and thick, but to my surprise it glided on perfectly. There is a fine glitter effect to the color. Most of the time it looks like a soft, brick red. In bright light, the red gets brighter, and the mahogany tones don’t show up so much. Well, what do you know? Thanks, couch!

The Silver Surfer

My ever-present polish pusher gave me this super shiny metallic silver for Valentine’s day. He even wrapped it. Yeah, my nails are pretty lucky. It’s true. This Rimmel 60 seconds polish has a nice shimmer, the kind that has a very fine grain glitter in it.
As a side note, when I walked outside to photograph my nails, hummingbirds flew around my head. The boy also keeps a veritable hummingbird diner right outside our door, and they flock by the dozens. I tried to capture one of those little guys in the background of my photos, but I wasn’t patient enough. Anyhoo, enjoy another week of beautiful nails!

Do unto others….

My mother got me a China Glaze polish 3-pack for Christmas. It includes “Mingle With Kringle” 1260 81398, a deep shimmery gold with a fine sparkle to it. I look at it and think of the Golden Rule. Which makes sense, as my mother, having gotten me the gift, is unendingly generous and asks for nothing in return. Anyway, I am not a fan of gold as an accessory. It comes across gaudy and aged to me. But gold as a nail color, something I never before considered, is fantastic!
I love how it maintains a glitter like shimmer without being a sparkle polish. I also love the way China Glaze brushes on. It is thick, yet smooth. China Glaze is very easy to apply.
Here is a picture of the polish indoors:
