BrickCon Nails

image
Second to drawing pictures, building with Legos was my favorite activitiy as a young child. I played with them every day, probably until 4th or 5th grade. After that, they became more of a novelty. I still remember going over to a friend’s house one night as a teenager and playing with their huge Lego assortment until the wee hours of the night. I remember coming home at 8 or so in the morning, to some very concerned parents. I tried to explain to them that I was up all night…playing with Legos. Anyway, Lego has had an adult revival lately. While I don’t play with them as an adult (I would if I had more time!), built models do fill my home.

Last weekend BrickCon was held in Seattle. It is a convention full of fun displays of amazing Lego work built by people all over. Everything is inspiring, some are amazing, and some are just sheerly amazing displays of how many Legos one person can have. I wanted to paint my nails Lego-themed to go with the event. However, I had a busy week and was sure I wouldn’t have the patience or skill to outline little circle that would look any good. My goal was to paint my nails in primary Lego-like colors and then paint lines over the top so each nail would look like a stack of bricks. I got too lazy to complete the job, but I am pretty happy with just the primary colors. The result is bright and cheerful and fun.

I chose a bright red, blue, yellow, and green. I painted each nail one color and then just repeated the colors, trying to avoid any “Christmas combos”. I really had fun with this one. It looks like my nails are little Lego’s themselves.

Summer Solstice Nails

image

As I prepare for the giant Fremont summer solstice festival, I thought it would only be fitting to have my nails take part. I searched my nail stamps for a sun. Oddly enough, I have three moon designs, several stars, and endless winter designs, but not a single sun, and with the exception of a cocktail glass, nothing even remotely summery. Time for new nail stamps, I say! I eventually decided on sunshine yellow polish with sparkely golden disks to represent the sun, er, or many suns.

The yellow color is “show stopper”, a Pure Ice shade that I put on after my OPI natural nails base coat.

I painted an accent nail in China Glaze’s “mingle with cringle”. It was part of a Christmas set. Seriously, why are nail polishes so focused on winter? Amyhoo, I then topped the yellow off with golden confetti disks. I applied them with tweezers, which naturally set many disks flying, as suns do, all over the living room. I drenched the nails in CND super shiny topcoat and discovered that the confetti is so think that it created a leeward side. I had to smear the topcoat around in several directions.

I went to bed, pretty happy with myself for creating a manicure that actually represented the solstice.

But then, I was awakened from horrific dreams. Apparently, one of the disks got a snag. They are kind of a thick tin foil, and the snag felt like the sharp end of a soup can after it’s main attacked by a can opener. In my dreams, this snag translated to countless daggers jutting out of my nails, causing a bloody masscre of everything I touched, both to my pleasure, and to my horror. I woke up, looking at my nails and thinking they were the ugliest things I’ve ever seen. Luckily I am no newcomer to bad dreams and I adjusted OK. So, there’s the summer soslitce for you! Seriously, I think they will be super fun for the celebration, and I’m looking forward to enjoying more sun!

Christmas toes!

My Christmas nails were so much fun, I decided to do matching Christmas toes.

image

I did them exactly the same way as the nails. I usually avoid green on the toes because from head height they look moldy. But this totally works and is festive without being moldy!

Christmas nails

After having some snowmen nails, I decided it was time for some Christmas nails. Stay tuned for Santa hats next time! I love getting in the spirit!

image

The festive, party-themed confetti is from a Color Craze L.A. Colors gift pack that the boy’s mom gave me for Christmas last year. I love the colors in this one! I did have to lay on several thick coats to get this effect, but it dried quickly and didn’t smudge.

Its so hard to find a decent green color. But I finally found one. Love it! This is Pure Ice Free Spirit. I have a feeling it will become a new favorite.

And, the green you see here was achieved with only ONE coat! Can you believe it?!

And of course, I used the awesome CND base and top coats.
